Thomas Müller Sends Message to Lionel Messi After MLS Cup Final
After falling in the MLS Cup final, Thomas Müller broke his silence with a direct and respectful message for Lionel Messi, acknowledging the Argentine as the decisive factor behind Inter Miami’s title.
Inter Miami made history by capturing their first-ever MLS Cup, but one of the most striking moments came after the match. Thomas Müller, captain of the Vancouver Whitecaps, posted a public message reflecting on the defeat — and on the brilliance of Lionel Messi, who once again shaped the outcome of a final.
The team coached by Javier Mascherano won 3–1 at Chase Stadium, with an own goal from Edier Ocampo and strikes by Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende. Ali Ahmed scored for Vancouver, but the Whitecaps never managed to match the attacking rhythm of the Herons, heavily influenced by Messi’s creativity.
Messi vs. Müller: A New Chapter in a Longstanding Duel
More than a decade after the 2014 World Cup Final, where Germany defeated Argentina, Messi and Müller found themselves facing off again in a decisive match — this time in a completely different setting and stage of their careers. And this time, the outcome favored the Argentine superstar.
Messi delivered three assists, guiding Inter Miami to their historic championship. For Müller, the match had a clear turning point.
“Leo Messi gave three assists, and I didn’t give any. He won that duel. He sealed the title — there’s no point pretending otherwise,” the German admitted in a post-match video.
The brief yet powerful message underscored Messi’s ability to influence games at the highest level, even at 38 years old.
Müller Thanks Vancouver Supporters After First MLS Season
Along with praising Messi, Müller also shared words of gratitude for the Whitecaps community:
“Such a beautiful journey with my team and the Whitecaps family! Thank you for all the support in my first MLS season.”
The 35-year-old forward made an immediate impact after arriving in the summer. He scored seven goals, added three assists and surpassed 500 minutes in regular-season play. During the playoffs he contributed one goal but remained a key figure throughout Vancouver’s run to the final.
