Is Ter Stegen Close to Returning for Barcelona? Hansi Flick Breaks His Silence
Barcelona is living through a transitional moment between the posts —a stretch marked by uncertainty, reshuffling, and unexpected protagonism. But the outlook is finally beginning to clear. After more than four months away, Marc-André ter Stegen is edging closer to a competitive return… even if reclaiming his old role is no longer guaranteed.
Hansi Flick’s words on Monday painted a picture that is both optimistic and revealing: the captain is near, but the goalkeeping hierarchy at Barça has changed.
Ter Stegen Nears Full Clearance
The German goalkeeper trained once again at full intensity with the squad and is “getting closer and closer” to being included in a matchday list, Flick confirmed.
He even left the door open for ter Stegen to be available for the Champions League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt —the clearest sign yet that his recovery has entered its final phase.
Ter Stegen underwent surgery on July 29 to resolve lingering back issues stemming from the Euros. Barcelona opted for a slow, structured rehabilitation, and the latest training sessions have reintegrated him fully into first-team dynamics.
One detail stood out: in the most recent session, the captain worked on the pitch alongside Joan García and Wojciech Szczesny, with no academy goalkeepers involved.
A strong image of just how close his return now feels.
Flick Holds His Line: Joan García Remains “Number One”
Ter Stegen’s impending comeback does not automatically restore him to his former status.
Flick was firm and unequivocal:
“Joan García is the number one.”
The coach has found reliability and composure in the young goalkeeper, and he doesn’t intend to disrupt the current order. Flick even stated he hasn’t spoken with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann about ter Stegen’s situation, a sign that Barcelona’s internal plan takes priority.
Everything suggests that the captain will re-enter the rotation gradually —first as part of the group, and later fighting to reclaim a spot that once felt untouchable.
A Near-Full Squad… But Still No Araújo
Barcelona approaches the Eintracht match with most of the roster available. The confirmed absences are:
- Gavi (long-term injury)
- Dani Olmo (still recovering)
- Ronald Araújo, currently sidelined as he addresses mental health matters
With that backdrop, the spotlight lands squarely on the goalkeeping debate. Will Flick proceed cautiously with his returning leader, or will ter Stegen’s sharp training session push the timeline forward?
What is certain now is this:
Ter Stegen is no longer watching his comeback from afar —it’s right in front of him.
