War Between Terence Crawford and the WBC? Boxer Sparks Controversy With Explosive Remarks
After Mauricio Sulaimán announced that Terence Crawford had been stripped of the Super Middleweight title, the American fighter has fired back.
Tensions have escalated between Terence Crawford and the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaimán. The American boxer went all-in against Sulaimán after the WBC declared the Super Middleweight title vacant.
Crawford unleashed his anger during an Instagram Live, questioning the WBC’s actions and comparing the organization to other boxing organizations.
What Did Terence Crawford Say About Sulaimán?
In a statement, the WBC said it had tried multiple times to contact Terence Crawford. After receiving no response from the fighter, his manager, or his legal adviser — and due to unpaid sanctioning fees from his last two fights, including the bout against Canelo Álvarez last September — the organization decided to act.
Crawford responded:
“I’m not paying you … anything. What the … are you talking about? What makes you better than any of the other organizations? Huh? Answer that. The WBA, the WBO, and the IBF accepted what I gave them… but you. You, the WBC, think you’re better than everyone, right? You’ve got the green belt, which doesn’t mean … The real … belt is The Ring belt, and that one’s free.”
The comments were in reference to a $300,000 debt mentioned by Sulaimán.
Crawford continued:
“(Sulaimán) said I supposedly made $50 million from the Álvarez fight. You don’t know how much I made. You’re speculating again. So listen, Mauricio. I appreciate you, because everybody knows you were with Canelo. You were bothered that I beat Canelo. It’s fine, it happens. If you were a true fan of the sport, you would’ve said ‘congratulations’ instead of having that look on your face.”
Can Canelo Álvarez Fight for the Vacant Title?
For now, the WBC has declared the Super Middleweight title vacant. It will be contested by Christian Mbilli (29-0-1) and Hamzah Sheeraz (22-0-1).
Regarding the possibility of Canelo Álvarez reclaiming the belt, Sulaimán explained that the Mexican fighter is recovering from an injury, so he wasn’t considered at this time. However, Canelo will be eligible to compete for the title as soon as he requests it.
